Gravitational waves unfolds the unknown story about space

The discovery has been considered a starting point for a new era in astrophysics. Some call it a revolution in motion. Rainer Weiss and Kip Thorne’s observation of gravitational waves was awarded with this year’s Nobel Prize in physics. Piezo LEGS® will play a major part in the next step of detecting and exploring gravitational waves.

Weiss & Thorne’s own creation LIGO are considered the most precise and sensitive measuring instrument that the world has ever seen. On 14 September 2015, the experiment was able, for the first time in history, to detect vibrations in space created by two black holes colliding. Proving once and for all that Albert Einstein was right when he back in 1918 predicted the existence of gravitational waves as a part of his general theory of relativity.

Gravitational waves are testing the limits of our knowledge and gives us the opportunity to follow the most turbulent events in space in a completely new way. LISA – world’s first space-based gravitational wave observatory

The Netherlands Organisation for applied scientific research, TNO, in collaboration with Airbus Defense and Space have developed and tested a concept for in-field pointing mechanism for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), that also identifies gravitational waves in space. Building on the success of Weiss & Thorne, LISA will be the first space-based gravitational wave observatory.

Our precision motor Piezo LEGS® works as a defining component in the new motorized mirror that is necessary to perform the extremely meticulous laser pointing that the LISA experiment requires.

According to NASA the LISA project will “complement our knowledge about the beginning, evolution and structure of our universe.”
